My Portfolio

My name is Jackie Smith, I play soccer and am very active. I play soccer for Sporting Blue Valley and have for 8 years. I live with my parents and my little sister. Photography has inspired me to be even more active and get out into the world to see and go to places I didn't think I would. I have enjoyed photography very much and even though it can get hard to find success sometimes, there is always a way through the challenges. Here are some of the pictures I have taken below.
This photo was one of the very first photos that I took. I think that means this photo was a big step in the direction of how all the rest of my photos were taken. It is of a person taking a picture from the eyes of someone near a bench. I was thinking of the angle I could take the photo from and how to make my background enjoyable while also obtaining some steady detail to entertain the eyes so my picture isn't boring. This was taken outside at school on a nice August day.

This photo is one of my favorite photos that I've taken. It was a part of my architecture roll. It is of a bridge with street work on it and graffiti. I think the graffiti gives the picture a very artistic look to intrigue any viewers. This was taken downtown and thankfully there weren't too many cars driving by so I could perfect this shot with timing and aperture. Also, my family joined me while I took the pictures in this roll and they enjoyed this view as well.

This print was an alternative process. It is called a sandwich print. You stack two negatives on top of each other inside the negative carrier before putting it into the enlarger which basically previews your print. One of the negatives had a building on it from my architecture roll and the other negative was from my journey roll when I took a picture of a field. I think they work well as a sandwich print with each other because both don't have that much detail to offer besides the main subject, making them boring alone but perfect together.

This photo is also one of my favorite pictures I've taken. It is a shot from my journey roll. My journey roll was pretty successful so a lot of the pictures on here are from it and you will see more when you scroll down. I think it is so cool how I caught a wheelie right in front of me and somehow turned out with seemingly perfect focus. I was standing on the sidewalk facing the opposite way with my dad beside me and he told me to turn around and get a picture of it. I quickly spun and clicked down on my camera to take a picture with my shutter speed set at 125. My dad asked if I got the picture and I assumed it wouldn't turn out but I just said "We'll see." Now here it is as one of my best photos.

This picture is from my nature, landscapes, or waterscapes roll. It might be difficult to tell what it is a picture of so I'll explain. It is a photo of a swing that is tied and hanging from a tree with beautiful clouds in the background as art and somewhat hiding the sun. This spot is across from my house in front of a ginormous pond where people usually go fishing.

I took this picture while in the car with a friend. It is from my reflections, machines, technology, and transportation roll. I think the lights from the cars and street lights really bring the picture to life and give it action. I know the photo is very dark but the lights help brighten it up in certain areas making it more interesting.

This print is an extra credit print that I made. It was taken downtown in front of Commerce Bank where my dad used to work. There is a beautiful fountain out in front of it which you can see part of in the photo. There is a man on a vehicle passing by and not completely in focus for an action shot.

This print is another alternative process. It is called a toned print. In photography, toning is a method of altering the color of black-and-white photographs. It is where you make a normal print but after you put it in chemicals that strip the blacks from the print. Then you put the print in water to wash the chemicals off and after it's clear you put the print into other chemicals that bring the blacks back but in a toned sort of shadow. I really like this photo because of the view and angle I took it from. I think it is appealing to the eye how you can see everything in the picture but at the same time, there is a fence barrier that your eyes can pass through.

I really like this photo because it is satisfying to me. I like the geometry in the architecture and how the shapes work together in real life. There is still some action in the back but the main subject and what stands out is the building and the windows and that is what I was trying to capture as the main idea.

This photo has a lot of different shades of white and black. There are a lot of buildings and lights as well. The architecture in this print is exciting and diverse. You can see somebody walking by and a car passing which advertises life, as well as time, being frozen at peace. There is a lot to look at in this photo but it isn't too busy and doesn't overwhelm the eye. I like how much this photo captures and the angle the viewer gets to see from.
